The Science Behind Using Sage
Smudging or Saging - is the act of burning dried sage to produce a cleansing smoke.
Smudging is an ancient tradition used across the world to help cleanse and balance the space and energy around us. Often seen as "woo-woo" by many, this act is, in fact, a powerful way to cleanse and kill bacteria from your home or office, as well as cleanse your own energy.
A study published in 2007 in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology showed that the smoke produced from burning sage (the authors of the article call this “medicinal smoke”) is able “to completely eliminate diverse plant and human pathogenic bacteria of the air within confined space.”
What this means from a Scientific Point of View:
The smoke produced from the dried sage is believed to produce negative ions, which bind themselves to positive ions in the air or environment. These particles can be viruses, mould spores, bacteria, dust, and other harmful particles that may be present. Research has proven that burning sage removes an incredible 94% of bacteria in the air, with the air still being clear the next day (when researches re-tested it.)
What this means from an Energy-Based/ Spiritual Point of View:
Many traditions in cultures all around the world, including temples, churches, ritual ceremonies, holistic health etc, have been using "Smoke" as a cleansing tool. The smoke produced from the sage is said to help release and clear out negative energy from the environment or a persons energy field/aura.
Why use Sage over Air Purifiers?
- Sage is 100% natural and so does not have any plastic with it that will be thrown away. It will naturally decompose - or be burnt fully - leaving nothing behind.
- Air Purifiers are often full of nasty chemicals that are harmful to you and your environment, whereas Sage is a natural plant-based product.
- A lot of air purifiers often just mask the smell in the air, rather than kill off any harmful energies or bacteria in the air.
- You add the beauty of a ritual when you use Sage. Adding mindfulness and intention into your cleanse.
